Hypershot Renders

Postby EarthMover on Sat Sep 13, 2008 4:27 pm

Thanks again Ibon for turning me on to Hypershot. What a cool, fun and easy program to use. It's a shame that they don't support artificial lighting, displacement or clipmapping. Here's a few quickie renders of things from the warehouse. (Actually, these are just screenshots from the program's real time rendering)

It has no displacement, but with a workaround clipmapping and artificial lighting can be achieved. After MANY days of search and trial and errors i discovered a way to do it. If you want to get the effects, you have to do the following things:

Clip mapping: Import your .png or .tiff image (for example, a person) in sketchup. It has to have a transparent background. Open it in hypershot. Double click in the material (person) and select both "Texture Modulate" and "Shadow Modulate". Now change it's Diffuse and Specular to pure white. To finish select ANOTHER environment illumination. When you change to another illumination the scene refreshes and the shadow is no more square.

Artificial Lighting:
Double click in the material you want to become emitter. I'll give you an HDRI image. Browse that texture in the material dialog. Now your material emmits light. You can change it's power and color in the diffuse channel, the power are the Lum.

Hope to have been helpful ;) . Ibon

Thanks my friend! Funny thing....I was just reading this on the Bunkspeed forum. You're explanation is a lot more clear.

One question for you....do you know how to change the field of view to create a perspective?

Actually I figured it out. Alt+ Middle mouse button is just for zoom. Alt+Right Mouse Button (while moving mouse left to right) will change the "dolly" which apparently changes the field of view. I'm testing the HDR light source now. Thanks again!

Well, in my pc Alt + mouse wheel is for changing FOV, but i may have different configuration for some reason

By the way... i'm trying to achieve realistic water, but i can't. Do you know how to get it? many thanks. It's good to have anyone like you with common problems :)

Ibon,

I did some quick trial and error with the pool water material that is under the "other" section of the material library and got a decent result. I changed the settings as follows:
Alpha - .05
Reflectivity - .5
bumptexture tile s - 0.15
bumptexture tile t - 0.04

Oh, and you're right about the mouse wheel. It's confusing at first, but I got it to adjust the perspective. Thanks!

Adam, I must say, You're the reason I've no money to spend on shopping this week! I splashed out and bought Hypershot. And I must say, it's bloody brilliant!

I'm playing around with the trial, and it looks great. I'm half a gig under the recommended RAM and I'm surfing and listening to music, and it gives me this in under 10 mins:

This looks like really promising software, would really like to see some more architectural examples though

Thanks Adam! I didn't see that section

Now it's quite easy make water, but it's very strange not to have to deal with IOR when making it... plastics have IOR values, but not bump slots :(

Here's a quick Architectural render. Model was taken from 3DWH (VaSt Architecture). I downloaded model...exploded...exported as .obj file....opened in Hypershot.....dropped in a few textures and rendered. (I also added a high pass layer and soft shadow in PS) Total time from start to finish....25 min. Tree was also added in SU and ibon's clipmap suggestions worked well. All in all, not perfectly photoreal, as this is a biased raytrace engine, but it does have a nice look and a soft feel. I'll try out some more architecture later.

That's a pretty good architectural render. Better than the ones at the website, given the time. You got more light out of it. So all the shadows in HS are soft? Does it display sun shading?

@geh4evr - Sorry to hear you spent your shopping money! I think you'll find it was worth it.....eating is overrated anyway. :) Which version did you pick up?

@Huggkruka - No worries. Good job on the quick render. Perhaps try turning on the studio lighting option or use an HDRI...it will bring your reflections to life

@Remus - Materials are very simple to setup. I'm a big VRay and Kerky user, so Hypershot is almost frustratingly simple. But I guess that's the beauty. As Ibon pointed out, some of the options for certain material types seem to defy logic, but in the end, there is no denying the stunning results.

@pbacot - Thanks! There is a button to go from soft to sharp shadows. All sun shading is based on a HDRI input, that is separate from the background image. You can easily change the direction of the lighting to match the background image, by holding down the CTRL key and moving left to right with the mouse and left mouse button. What's cool is that you can see the lighting change in real time.
