I've moved to 64bit at home. And at the office we're now moving to 64bit. It's annoying that we can't see thumbnails of .skp files in the Explorer UI anymore except from within 32bit apps' file dialogs.

Doesn't look like there'll be any 64bit version of the thumbnail extension coming from Google any time soon.

So I was wondering, surely there's enough collective knowledge to create such a thing.
We don't know the format of the .skp format, but we know that the thumbnail is embedded PNG data. Might be mulitple PNG data inside a .skp, but the first is the thumbnail.

Sniffing out the thumbnail is easy, but: anyone got the know-how of 64bit Shell Extensions?

    Quick Google:

Seems that C++ is preferred. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/netfxbcl/thread/1428326d-7950-42b4-ad94-8e962124043e/

You'll see thumbnails when doing file->open, file->Save as... from within SU because SU is using the 32-bit common dialogs. If you're looking in explorer, its 64-bit.

Yeah there are 32 bit explorers available that will still show the thumbnails. Vista has an option to force the native Windows Explorer to 32 bit when it gets run. Win 7 had that option during the beta, but it was removed in the final RC version, and is still disabled in the actual Win 7 release product....and no one knows why.

It would be nice if SU just made it work for 64 bit exporers. Or if Thom could figure out the shell extension thing for us all πŸ˜„

I've had a look at the C++ examples - it's going over my head. Need someone with C++ experience to put this together.

...or Google....? Is it on your agenda? Considering how many are moving to 64bit?

Thanks for passing on the word Andrew. (would it help the case if I put in an official request myself? - or by any of the other users?)

Just to add to my last statement - I work in an architectural company, lots of very heavy software, Autodesk's suite of AutoCAD and Revit etc, Adobe... They all consume more and more resources. We just recently upgraded our computers, and when I did we chose 64bit as we no point in staying with 32bit any more. We need 64bit in order to make our hardware keep with the software - but now we're left with missing thumbnails for .skp files and even .pdf files (unless we open 32bit apps just to be able to browse visually.)
